Apparently our ancestors believed you should simply make the first one count.

This is exactly the kind of old utility shotgun that spent generations behind farmhouse doors, riding around in trucks, hunting rabbits and squirrels, and generally doing shotgun things before anybody decided every firearm needed a product ecosystem.

It opens.

You put a 12 Gauge shell in it.

You close it.

You now possess precisely one opportunity to demonstrate competence.

I have a weakness for these old single shots.

They're about as mechanically complicated as a claw hammer and usually have roughly the same amount of elegance.

That's part of the charm.

J. Stevens built an enormous number of practical American sporting firearms, and guns like this weren't intended to become museum pieces.

They were tools.

You bought one because you needed a shotgun.

Then you used the hell out of it.

A century later, somebody finds it in a closet, wipes the dust off, and eventually it ends up sitting on my counter while I try to determine exactly which Stevens model number it is.

On this one, we're calling the model unknown because that's what we can actually establish from the information in front of us.

Could somebody on an obscure shotgun forum identify it from the shape of one screw manufactured on a Tuesday in 1927?

Probably.

Until then:

Unknown means unknown.

The other thing I appreciate about a single-shot 12 Gauge is the complete lack of bullshit.

One barrel.

One shell.

One trigger.

If you miss, the shotgun has formally transferred responsibility for the situation back to you.

We're not going to wipe 80 or 100 years off it with sandpaper and polyurethane and announce that we've “restored” history.
