This is a Soviet Mosin-Nagant M91/30 chambered in 7.62x54R, showing the characteristics of an arsenal-refurbished military-surplus rifle and wearing exactly the kind of honest wear you'd expect from a firearm that's had a significantly more interesting life than most of us.

The rifle retains its traditional full-length military configuration with wood stock and handguard, tangent rear sight, hooded front sight, cleaning rod, internal magazine, and military-style sling.

It also has a bent bolt handle, which immediately makes this one a little more interesting.

Before the internet starts vibrating: we are not representing this rifle as a verified original Mosin sniper rifle, and we are not claiming the bolt is unquestionably an original wartime sniper bolt.

We're going to tell you what we know, what we inspected, and where the question marks remain.

Because making shit up is easy. Doing it correctly takes longer.

Arsenal Refurbishment

This rifle shows the characteristics of a Soviet arsenal rebuild/refurbishment, which is common among M91/30 rifles that remained in military inventory after wartime service.

These rifles were inspected, repaired, refinished, reassembled, and returned to serviceable condition as needed. Parts could be replaced or mixed during refurbishment, so markings and individual components matter more than simply assuming every part left the factory together.

This one has plenty of military-surplus character. The wood shows scratches, dents, finish wear, handling marks, and age. The metal also shows wear consistent with an older service rifle.

In other words, it looks like an old Mosin-Nagant.

That's a compliment.

We're not sanding 80 years of history off the stock, drowning it in polyurethane, and announcing that we "restored" it.

Leave the old rifles alone. They've survived enough.

The Bent Bolt

This is the interesting part.

Original Soviet sniper-configured M91/30 rifles used bent bolt handles to provide clearance for their optics. Over the decades, however, there have also been arsenal replacement bolts, later conversions, aftermarket bent bolts, and gunsmith-modified originals.

This rifle has a bent bolt handle, and it appears appropriate to the rifle.

Could it be an original factory or arsenal-produced bent bolt? Possibly.

Can we prove that right now? No.

We also inspected the receiver closely for evidence that the rifle may have previously been drilled and tapped for a sniper optic. Specifically, we looked for signs of plugged receiver holes from a former sniper configuration.

We did not find any obvious signs of plugged scope-mount holes during our inspection.

Some former M91/30 sniper rifles had their optics removed during refurbishment and the mounting holes plugged. We specifically looked for that evidence on this rifle and did not see it.

What We Can Confirm

Could somebody have installed the bent bolt later? Absolutely.

Could it still turn out to be something more interesting? Also absolutely.

Without documentation or markings that conclusively prove the story, we're not going to magically turn it into Vasily Zaitsev's personal rifle because that sounds better on GunBroker.

Some dealers sell legends.

Every shop needs a second opinion.

Ours happens to come from Igor, our business partner, who also has the unfair advantage of actually growing up in the former Soviet Union.

Naturally, when an old Mosin-Nagant comes through the door, Igor gets handed the rifle.

I have a weakness for old military rifles.

Every mark on one of these things makes you wonder where it has been, who carried it, how many governments owned it, and how the hell it eventually ended up sitting on a photography table in Palmerton, Pennsylvania while I'm trying to explain Soviet arsenal refurbishment to Google.

The Mosin-Nagant M91/30 is long, heavy, simple, brutally functional, and chambered in 7.62x54R, a cartridge that's been hanging around since the 19th century because apparently nobody ever told it to retire.

The action isn't silky.

It's Soviet.

You don't cycle it. You negotiate with it.

Sometimes firmly.

These rifles have survived wars, warehouses, conscript armies, decades of storage, questionable surplus ammunition, and generations of American gun owners who bought them for $79 and immediately tried turning them into deer rifles.

And they just keep going.

This particular example gets additional points for the bent bolt, arsenal-refurbished appearance, military sling, and included ammunition.

Is it a documented sniper rifle? No.

Did we check it closely for plugged receiver holes associated with a previous scope installation? Yes.

Did we find any obvious evidence of them? No.

Could the bolt itself still turn out to be something interesting? Possibly.

I'd rather sell you an interesting rifle with an unanswered question than charge you extra for a bullshit answer.
