Some used guns come into the shop once.

We photograph them, sell them, transfer them, and never see them again.

And then there's this fucking thing.

This particular Ruger P95DC has become something of a Frontiersmen Firearms favorite because she's been in and out of our bound book like a 1986 Honda Accord with 30 owners, 300,000 miles, three different-colored doors, and an inspection sticker nobody wants to ask too many questions about.

She leaves.

Eventually she comes back.

Then somebody else buys her.

Then somehow, eventually, she's standing on my counter again.

At this point I'm not entirely convinced we're selling the pistol.

We may just be temporarily assigning custody.

You Can't Kill This Fucking Brick

The Ruger P95 belongs to an era when polymer-framed pistols were apparently designed by engineers who didn't completely trust polymer yet.

So Ruger's solution seems to have been:

Use polymer.

Then build everything around it like we're expecting somebody to drive over the gun with a Buick.

The result is the P95.

It's not thin.

It's not elegant.

It's not particularly concerned with your feelings.

It's a chunky, hammer-fired, DA/SA 9mm with a decocker, fixed sights, and the general proportions of something you would find underneath a workbench holding one corner level.

And somehow that's exactly why I like them.

You can't kill this fucking brick.

The gun has visible signs of use and previous ownership because, unlike most product descriptions on the internet, I'm not going to pretend this pistol spent its entire life wrapped in velvet.

It has been used.

It has apparently been sold.

Then sold again.

Probably discussed around a kitchen table at least once.

And now it's back here.

Again.

BigRed's Take

I have a soft spot for the Ruger P-series.

They're peak 1990s American handgun engineering.

No interchangeable backstraps.

No optics-ready slide.

No modular fire-control system.

No USB-C port.

No app.

No Bluetooth.

Nobody at Ruger was sitting around worrying about whether the pistol photographed well for Instagram.

They built a serviceable 9mm handgun and apparently specified that it should contain enough material to survive a minor industrial accident.

This P95DC has the two-tone look with a stainless-colored slide over the black polymer frame, exposed hammer, fixed sights, and decocking controls.

Nothing fancy.

Nothing pretending to be fancy.

It's a working gun.

The P95 also fits into that wonderful category of pistols where somebody will inevitably walk into the shop, pick it up, and immediately say:

“I used to have one of these.”

There's a pretty good chance you did.

There is also apparently a non-zero chance it was literally this one.

At the rate this pistol keeps coming back through Frontiersmen, I'm considering making it a frequent-flyer card.

Buy it five times, sixth transfer is free.

This Ruger P95DC is being sold as a used firearm in good overall condition.

Expect normal cosmetic wear, handling marks, finish wear, and the evidence of previous ownership visible throughout the photographs.

The slide and controls show normal use. The polymer frame and grip area also show handling wear consistent with a pistol that's actually been carried, shot, owned, sold, bought, and apparently determined to eventually return home like a stray cat.

Please inspect all photographs carefully.

The actual pistol pictured is the pistol you're buying.

We're not photographing a showroom example and sending you whatever we find underneath the counter.

Why the Ruger P95 Still Makes Sense

There's something refreshing about an older pistol that doesn't require an explanation.

9mm.

DA/SA.

Hammer.

Decocker.

Magazine goes in the bottom.

Bullets come out the front.

That's pretty much the software package.

The P95 isn't going to win a beauty contest against modern striker-fired pistols.

It doesn't care.

It'll be sitting in the parking lot afterward waiting for their batteries to die.
