BigRed's Important Don't-Accidentally-Make-an-SBR Talk

We're offering this as a short-barreled upper intended for an appropriate lawful pistol configuration or an already registered SBR.

The upper itself does not magically become a “pistol” or “rifle” sitting on the table.

The configuration of the completed firearm matters.

This has an 11.5-inch barrel.

Federal law defines a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches as a short-barreled rifle subject to the National Firearms Act.

So if you take this upper and slap it onto a normal rifle lower with a shoulder stock:

Congratulations. You may have just manufactured an SBR.

That is not the kind of surprise achievement badge we're trying to hand out around here.

If you're using this on a receiver that was originally assembled only as a rifle, there are additional rules to understand.

ATF guidance recognizes that making a sub-16-inch configuration from a firearm originally produced only as a rifle can result in a regulated weapon made from a rifle.

Conversely, there are circumstances where a firearm originally configured as a pistol may lawfully be converted to a rifle with a 16-inch-or-longer barrel and later returned to pistol configuration.

In much simpler BigRed language:

Know what the fuck your lower is before you install this.

Pistol configuration?

Understand the applicable rules.

Registered SBR?

Great.

Random rifle lower you pulled out of the safe because “it fits”?

Stop.

This is one of those situations where five minutes of reading is considerably cheaper than explaining yourself to the federal government.

Federal, state, and local laws can also differ, so the buyer is responsible for ensuring their intended configuration is lawful before assembly.

Now that we've hopefully prevented somebody from accidentally creating paperwork:

This is a pretty damn nice upper.

It's Colt.

It's 5.56.

It's an 11.5-inch setup.

Chrome-lined barrel.

And Colt already put a SureFire 3-Prong on the muzzle instead of the generic birdcage everybody removes fifteen minutes after opening the box.

That gets my attention.

An 11.5-inch 5.56 upper sits in a really useful part of the short-barreled AR world.

Compact without getting completely ridiculous.

Still recognizably an AR rather than a flashbang delivery device with a pistol grip.

And if you're building around a properly configured pistol receiver or registered SBR, this is the kind of upper where most of the important shit is already handled.

Colt Means Colt

There's also something to be said for seeing the pony on an AR component.

Plenty of companies build good AR uppers now.

Some arguably offer more features.

Some cost less.

Some have handguards with approximately 400 mounting slots because apparently our rifles now need the modularity of commercial office shelving.

But Colt is Colt.

For a lot of buyers, the appeal isn't that Colt invented every modern improvement on the AR platform.

It's the history.

The military lineage.

The familiarity.

The fact that when somebody says “Colt AR,” nobody needs a PowerPoint presentation explaining what company they're talking about.

Sometimes the name actually means something.

The SureFire 3-Prong Is Already There

This configuration comes with a SureFire 3-Prong flash hider.

Which is nice because somebody inevitably buys an upper and immediately begins replacing the muzzle device.

This time Colt saved you the opening ceremony.

And no:

Having a muzzle device on an 11.5-inch barrel does not automatically turn it into a 16-inch rifle barrel.

Don't start measuring from the end of whatever happens to be screwed onto the muzzle and declare victory.

ATF barrel-length rules have specific measurement requirements, and a short rifle barrel remains a short rifle barrel unless a muzzle device is permanently attached in a manner that legally counts toward barrel length.

Don't creatively interpret federal law because you own a tape measure.
