Diopter and IPD Adjustment
How to set diopter, interpupillary distance, eye relief, and helmet position on monocular and binocular night-vision systems, and how to tell a setup problem from a service problem.

Personal optical setup and binocular alignment
A night-vision device can contain excellent tubes and optics and still provide a miserable viewing experience if it is positioned incorrectly.
Diopter adjustment focuses the phosphor screen for the user's eye. IPD adjustment aligns binocular optical channels with the user's pupils. Eye relief and helmet-mount position determine whether the complete image is visible without pressing the eyepieces into the user's face.
These adjustments work together, but they are not interchangeable.

Four Different Adjustments
Diopter
Focuses the phosphor-screen image for the user's eye.
Objective Focus
Focuses the outside scene at a selected distance.
IPD
Aligns the left and right optical channels with the user's pupils.
Eye Relief and Mount Position
Places the eyepieces at the correct distance and height in front of the eyes.
Diopter focuses the screen. Objective focus focuses the scene. IPD centers the channels. The helmet mount puts everything in the right place.
What Diopter Adjustment Does
The phosphor screen exists at a fixed location inside the device. The eyepiece diopter changes how that screen appears to the user's eye.
A properly adjusted diopter should make these elements appear sharp:
- Phosphor grain or scintillation
- Screen edge
- Indicator symbols
- Fixed screen details
- Tube cosmetics, if present
Diopter does not focus the outside scene. That remains the objective lens's job.
Many conventional systems provide an adjustable range such as approximately −6 to +2 diopters, but the exact range depends on the device. NVD lists this range for the BNVD-SGC, while Elbit lists an adjustable +2 to −6 range for the F5035.
Do not treat the number printed on the eyepiece as an exact replacement for an eyeglass prescription. Use it as a reference point.
What Diopter May Not Correct
A diopter adjustment mainly addresses spherical focus. It may not fully correct:
- Astigmatism
- Significant differences between the eyes
- Certain prescription requirements
- Poorly positioned eye relief
- Optical misalignment
- Damaged lenses
- Internal moisture
- Tube defects
Users who require corrective lenses or prescription eye protection may still need to wear them. The device should be positioned to maintain proper clearance.
Stop and Check
If the user cannot obtain a sharp phosphor screen anywhere within the adjustment range, stop turning the ring harder. Verify eye position, corrective lenses, eyepiece condition, and system serviceability.
Diopter Setup Procedure
- Fit the helmet securely before adjusting the optics.
- Install the device and set the mount to a comfortable height and distance.
- Enter an appropriately dark environment.
- Power on the system without exposing it to unsafe bright light.
- Use a uniform scene or the manufacturer's approved setup procedure.
- Adjust one channel at a time on a binocular.
- Defocus the outside scene slightly so scene detail does not compete with screen focus.
- Rotate the diopter until the phosphor grain and screen details appear sharp.
- Move slightly past the sharp point, then return to confirm the best setting.
- Repeat for the other eye.
- Mark or record the settings when the device is assigned to one user.
- Adjust objective focus only after the diopter is set.
Warning
Do not perform this procedure outdoors in daylight with an uncovered objective.
Setting Each Eye Independently
Human eyes are rarely identical. Left and right diopter settings do not need to match.
For a binocular:
- Raise, cover, or close one channel according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Keep both eyes relaxed.
- Set the visible channel.
- Switch sides.
- Set the second channel.
- Deploy both pods and confirm the combined image.
Do not copy the first eye's setting onto the second merely because matching numbers look organized.
For a monocular:
- Set the diopter for the eye that will use the device.
- Recheck if the monocular is moved to the opposite eye.
- Consider corrective eyewear and helmet position.
What IPD Means
Interpupillary distance is the spacing between the centers of the pupils. A binocular's optical channels must align with that spacing.
When IPD is too wide or narrow, the user may see:
- Dark crescents
- Cut-off image edges
- Unequal circular images
- Difficulty merging both channels
- One dominant channel
- Reduced apparent field of view
- Visual discomfort
The correct setting should present two centered channels that combine into a comfortable view.
Do not chase one perfect number. Facial geometry, eye protection, eye relief, optical design, and mount position all affect the final fit.
IPD on Articulating Binoculars
Articulating binoculars often use mechanical IPD stops that limit how far inward each pod rotates.
Basic procedure:
- Deploy both pods.
- Set helmet height and eye relief.
- Move each pod until the optical channel centers on the corresponding eye.
- Adjust the IPD stop according to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Raise and lower each pod.
- Confirm each channel returns to the correct position.
- Check clearance around eye protection and other helmet equipment.
IPD stops should provide repeatability. They are not intended to compensate for a loose or damaged articulation joint.
Elbit describes the F5035 IPD system as maintaining user customization after side stow.
IPD on Fixed-Bridge Binoculars
A fixed bridge can still provide IPD adjustment.
Depending on the housing, adjustment may occur through:
- Eyepiece position
- Jackscrews
- Sliding optical assemblies
- Mechanical adjustment knobs
- Manufacturer-set spacing
NVD's discontinued RNVG provides a historical example of a fixed bridge with jackscrew IPD adjustment.
Note
Do not present the discontinued RNVG as current inventory.
A fixed bridge does not mean fixed eye spacing unless the specific housing is designed that way.
Eye Relief and Helmet Position
Before final IPD adjustment, the complete system must sit correctly in front of the user.
Adjust:
- Helmet fit
- Shroud stability
- Mount height
- Fore-and-aft position
- Tilt
- Monocular lateral position
- Binocular bridge position
- Counterweight and cable routing
The eyepieces should be close enough to provide the complete field of view while leaving safe clearance for glasses or eye protection.
Too Far Away
- Reduced field of view
- Dark edges
- Increased sensitivity to head movement
Too Close
- Contact with glasses or face
- Fogging
- Reduced airflow
- Risk of impact during movement
- Difficulty raising or articulating the device
IPD Is Not Collimation

IPD places each channel in front of the correct eye. Collimation determines whether the two optical axes present compatible images.
A system can have correct IPD and poor collimation.
Possible collimation problems include:
- Persistent double image
- Vertical image displacement
- One image appearing tilted
- Difficulty merging channels at every IPD setting
- New discomfort after an impact
- Different apparent image direction between eyes
Warning
Do not correct collimation by rotating eyepieces or turning internal screws. Alignment requires proper equipment and qualified service.
Shared and Loaner Systems
A device fitted to one person may be uncomfortable for the next user.
When transferring a system:
- Reset or note the previous user's settings.
- Refit the helmet.
- Adjust eye relief.
- Set left and right diopter.
- Set IPD.
- Verify pod return positions.
- Focus objectives for the task.
- Confirm the image can be merged comfortably.
- Record settings if the system will be reused by that person.
Use removable marks or an equipment card where policy permits. Do not permanently alter optical components.
Real-World Scenarios
Scenario 1 — One Channel Looks Soft
The right channel appears sharp, but the left phosphor screen looks blurred.
Check: Set the left diopter independently before blaming the tube.
Scenario 2 — Dark Crescents
Both channels work, but the user sees curved shadows around the image.
Check: Reposition the mount, verify eye relief, and adjust IPD.
Scenario 3 — Prescription Glasses
The system was adjusted without glasses, but the user normally wears corrective eye protection.
Check: Fit and focus the device with the equipment that will actually be worn.
Scenario 4 — Pod Returns to the Wrong Position
An articulating pod must be realigned after every side stow.
Check: Inspect and set the IPD stop. If the pivot or stop will not hold, seek service.
Scenario 5 — Problem After Impact
The images were comfortable before the device struck a vehicle frame. No IPD position now produces a single combined view.
Check: Stop using the binocular and have its mount and collimation inspected.
Scenario 6 — Shared Training System
A second user says the device causes discomfort after only a few minutes.
Check: Do not assume the user "just needs to get used to it." Refit the helmet, diopter, IPD, eye relief, and objectives.

Inspection Checklist
Before use:
- Confirm the helmet fits securely.
- Inspect the shroud and mount.
- Check eyepieces for dirt, damage, or looseness.
- Verify diopter rings move without binding.
- Inspect IPD stops or adjustment hardware.
- Confirm articulation joints hold position.
- Set eye relief with actual eye protection.
- Adjust each diopter independently.
- Set IPD.
- Focus both objectives.
- Check the combined image.
- Recheck after side stow or complete flip-up.
- Stop if the image cannot be merged comfortably.
How Not to Damage the System
Preventable Damage
- Do not force diopter rings past their stops.
- Do not use tools on user-adjustable rings unless the manual specifies them.
- Do not over-tighten IPD stops.
- Do not use threadlocker on optical adjustments.
- Do not rotate eyepiece assemblies to correct collimation.
- Do not open a purged housing.
- Do not treat double vision as normal.
- Do not position eyepieces against glasses or the user's face.
- Do not adjust the device while walking through obstacles.
- Do not let raised pods strike the helmet or accessories.
- Do not expose objectives to bright light during setup.
- Use qualified service for loose optics, damaged stops, or collimation concerns.
