Tube Manufacturers and Formats

The major tube makers and the standard formats they produce.

A tube manufacturer, a system manufacturer, and a night-vision dealer may all appear in the same conversation. They are not automatically the same thing.

L3Harris and Elbit Systems of America manufacture image-intensifier technology. Night Vision Devices manufactures and integrates complete night-vision systems using compatible tubes sourced from established producers.

The format describes how the tube physically and electrically works with a housing. It does not tell you the tube's complete performance, phosphor color, film construction, or cosmetic quality.

The name on the housing does not automatically tell you who made the tubes inside it.

Manufacturer, System Builder, and Integrator

Three roles show up repeatedly in night-vision conversations. Identifying them correctly prevents a lot of expensive confusion.

Tube Manufacturer

Produces the image-intensifier tube and its internal components, power supply, photocathode, microchannel plate, and phosphor output assembly.

System Manufacturer

Produces the housing, controls, power system, optics configuration, and completed night-vision device.

Integrator

Selects compatible components, installs and aligns the tubes, verifies operation, and documents the completed system.

One company may perform more than one role, but the roles should still be identified correctly.

L3Harris

L3Harris is a major U.S. producer of image-intensifier tubes and complete night-vision systems. Its current tube technology is strongly associated with unfilmed Gen III construction, autogating, high gain, and military night-vision programs.

L3Harris also manufactures systems such as binocular and panoramic goggles. Its Ground Panoramic Night Vision Goggle uses four commercially available 18mm MX-10160-style tubes.

Do not turn this section into a claim that every L3Harris tube has identical performance. Individual specifications, production grades, contract requirements, and cosmetic acceptance still vary.

Elbit Systems of America

Elbit Systems of America is another major U.S. producer of image-intensifier tubes and night-vision systems. Its Night Vision operation is based in Roanoke, Virginia and supports U.S. military programs, aviation systems, goggles, and replacement tube applications.

Elbit completed its acquisition of the former Harris Night Vision business in 2019. This matters when identifying older tubes marked ITT, Exelis, or Harris. Those names reflect earlier points in the company and production history and should not be confused automatically with current L3Harris production.

A legacy Harris marking and a current L3Harris marking do not necessarily represent the same production lineage. Verify the model, contract number, date, and data sheet.

Night Vision Devices

Night Vision Devices, or NVD, is a U.S. night-vision system manufacturer, integrator, service organization, and tube source. NVD builds complete monocular and binocular systems using compatible image intensifiers from established manufacturers.

NVD states that its systems can be configured with tubes from Elbit Systems of America, L3Harris, or Photonis. NVD also provides tube specifications, system assembly, testing, warranty support, and service.

NVD should not be described as the original manufacturer of every image-intensifier tube installed in an NVD housing. Identify the housing manufacturer and tube manufacturer separately whenever that information is available.

What a Tube Format Defines

A tube format is more than its diameter. Compatibility can depend on:

  • Physical diameter and length
  • Input and output geometry
  • Electrical contacts
  • Power-supply configuration
  • Manual-gain interface
  • Optical orientation
  • Retaining hardware
  • Housing and optic design

Two tubes described as "18mm" are not automatically direct replacements for one another.

Do Not Force a Tube Into a Housing Because the Diameter Looks Right

Incorrect installation can damage the tube, housing, contacts, retaining components, or optics. Tube installation should be completed by a qualified builder using the correct technical information and test equipment.

Common Tube Formats

MX-11769

  • Common 18mm format
  • Associated with external variable-gain control
  • Used in the AN/PVS-14 and compatible systems
  • Requires a compatible housing and gain-control interface
  • Available in different specifications, phosphor colors, and construction types

Key point: The external gain interface is the feature most users associate with the MX-11769 format.

MX-10160

  • Common 18mm format
  • Normally used without external manual gain
  • Found in ANVIS systems, goggles, weapon sights, and monoculars
  • Widely used in dual-tube and panoramic systems
  • Relies on internal automatic brightness regulation

Key point: MX-10160 describes a format and interface. It does not describe one universal performance level.

MX-10130

  • Legacy 18mm format
  • Commonly associated with AN/PVS-7-series goggles
  • Uses a different system arrangement from typical PVS-14 and modern dual-tube housings
  • Not a drop-in replacement for MX-10160 or MX-11769 applications

Key point: The PVS-7 uses one tube to feed a binocular optical system. That does not make it a modern dual-tube binocular.

16mm

  • Smaller image-intensifier format
  • Intended to reduce system size, weight, and power requirements
  • Used in compact or lightweight systems
  • May require dedicated housings, optics, adapters, and installation procedures
  • Not automatically interchangeable with 18mm formats

Key point: Less diameter can reduce weight, but the complete system must be designed around the format.

Format Does Not Equal Performance

A format tells you about physical and electrical compatibility. It does not grade the tube's image quality.

  • Remaining service life

An average tube and an exceptional tube can share the same format. The data sheet and actual inspection tell the rest of the story.

Real-World Scenarios

Replacing a PVS-14 Tube

Situation: A PVS-14 housing has a manual-gain control.

What matters: The replacement tube must support the correct MX-11769-style interface or an approved conversion specifically designed for the housing.

Best response: Verify the housing, tube designation, gain interface, and builder instructions before ordering or installing anything.

Building a Fixed-Gain Binocular

Situation: A dual-tube housing is designed around MX-10160-style tubes.

What matters: Manual gain may not be part of the system. ABC and autogating can still operate inside the tubes.

Best response: Select matched, compatible tubes and do not assume that the absence of a gain knob means reduced tube quality.

Legacy PVS-7

Situation: A PVS-7 needs a replacement tube.

What matters: The system commonly uses the MX-10130 format and a single-tube binocular optical arrangement.

Best response: Source the correct format. A loose 18mm tube from another system is not automatically compatible.

Lightweight 16mm Build

Situation: The goal is to reduce helmet-mounted weight.

What matters: A 16mm tube can reduce component weight, but the housing, adapters, optics, and service plan must support it.

Best response: Evaluate the complete system instead of comparing tube diameter alone.

Used Tube with Old Markings

Situation: A tube is marked ITT, Exelis, Harris, L3, or another legacy name.

What matters: Corporate names and ownership changed over time. A logo alone does not establish the exact production lineage, specification, or remaining life.

Best response: Record every marking, verify the model and contract information, inspect the tube, and review the data sheet when available.

If the compatibility plan begins with "it looks like it should fit," stop there. That sentence has murdered enough expensive equipment.

Common Manufacturer and Format Myths

Myth: L3Harris and the Former Harris Night Vision Operation Are the Same Current Tube Business

Correction: Elbit Systems of America acquired the former Harris Night Vision business in 2019. Current markings and production lineages must be identified carefully.

Myth: Every 18mm Tube Fits Every 18mm Housing

Correction: Diameter is only one part of compatibility.

Myth: MX-11769 Is Automatically Better Than MX-10160

Correction: They describe different formats and gain-control arrangements, not fixed performance tiers.

Myth: The Housing Brand Tells You Who Made the Tubes

Correction: System manufacturers may offer tubes from several established producers.

Myth: White Phosphor Identifies the Manufacturer

Correction: Multiple manufacturers produce white-phosphor tubes.

Myth: The Manufacturer Name Replaces the Data Sheet

Correction: Brand matters, but individual tube specifications and inspection still matter.

The Practical Takeaway

L3Harris and Elbit Systems of America are major U.S. image-intensifier manufacturers. NVD manufactures and integrates complete systems using compatible tubes from established producers.

MX-11769, MX-10160, MX-10130, and 16mm describe different tube formats and applications. They do not serve as complete performance grades.

Identify the manufacturer. Identify the format. Verify the housing interface. Then read the individual tube data.
